Mitch Hurwitz has renewed his Netflix membership. A Netflix rep confirms to The Hollywood Reporter that the Emmy-winning TV producer has signed a rare multiyear deal with the streaming company, where he will create and produce new series.
The partnership, which will see series under his The Hurwitz Company banner, marks a return to Netflix after the streamer released his 2013 revival of Arrested Development.
“We are lucky to be in business with Mitch Hurwitz, a true genius with one of the most distinctive voices in comedy today,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “Mitch’s inventive approach to Arrested Development — one of the top TV comedies of this generation — was ahead of its time, and we’re fortunate to have him on our team.”
Both Sarandos and Hurwitz have spoken optimistically about revisiting Arrested Development again at Netflix, but this new deal is for entirely new projects.
“It is incredibly inspiring to get to produce for Netflix, a company that not only doesn’t resist change, but is leaps and bounds ahead of everyone in forging it,” added Hurwitz. “The fact that I’m also getting one month of their streaming right to my TV or Xbox free… Well, it really takes the sting out of buying that Xbox.”
After making its first play at original content in 2012, Netflix continues to beef up its lineup. On the comedy front, Grace and Frankie was recently announced to join the renewed Orange is the New Black on the roster.
Hurwitz’s other TV credits include Running Wilde, The Ellen Show and Everything’s Relative. He is repped by CAA.
