Before taking the stage at Madison Square Garden, Ellie Goulding stopped by Today on Wednesday morning to calmly perform “Beating Heart,” one of her three songs from the Divergent soundtrack.

“The producers and director of this movie basically say you are the musical voice of the film,” Matt Lauer said to Goulding, who also contributed vocals to the film score.
Goulding clarified that she didn’t specifically pen “Beating Heart” for Divergent. “I had the song, and I performed it and recorded it, and I had given it to Greg Kurstin to produce it. I didn’t know they were gonna use it for the film, but actually, when I thought about it, I thought it was kind of perfect, and it really suited the whole theme.”
Dressed in an all-white outfit, she then performed an acoustic version of the newly released track.
Goulding’s “Dead in the Water” and “Hanging On,” from her album Halycon, are also featured on the Divergent soundtrack, which includes tracks by Zedd, Kendrick Lamar, Skrillex, A$AP Rocky and more.
