RANCHO CORDOVA-

A Sprint call center in Rancho Cordova informed hundreds of employees this week they are out of a job when the center closes.

In a release to FOX40, Sprint says employees will continue to work through March 25, and be paid through April 8. Some employees will be placed at other locations in Sprint.

According to the statement, “the job reductions are a direct reflection of lower call volume at our customer service call centers”.

Sprint attributes the reduced call volume on a list of reasons, including improvements to customer service, new technology is enabling customers to use self-service options to make changes to their accounts without the assistance of a person, and because most people are now using their second or third smartphone, they are smarter about the technology and require less assistance.

Sprint says customer service calls are down 23% from last year, and down 60% since 2008.

The Rancho Cordova call center has been open for more than 30 years. The layoffs impact more than 240 people.
