Two construction workers fell to their deaths while working on the new Putah Creek Bridge.

Just before 7 a.m. Friday, emergency crews got a call about a fall. They were in a construction basket, when it plummeted about 80 feet from the crane into the foundation of the new bridge. The two were pronounced dead on scene.

The victims worked for Disney Construction, a small construction company of about 100 employees out of Burlingame, Calif. About a dozen of them were working at the Putah Bridge site.

Company founder, Richard Disney was at the accident site. He said his company is like a tight knit family, which makes this tragedy even harder.

“They were great guys,” Disney said. “Family members of the crew. I’ve known their uncles and parents for a long time, so it’s very difficult. 32 years and I’ve never had this happen.”

A cable from the crane looked to be frayed. However, the exact cause of the accident is being investigated by CAL OSHA.

“They have crane experts on the scene here, inspecting the crane, trying to determine what exactly caused the fall,” Chief Aaron Mcalister of Winters and Dixon Fire Departments said.

Yolo County Coroner’s office has not released the identities of the victims.

The $15 million Solano County project is slated to be done by 2016. Meanwhile, the temporary bridge running parallel to it will remain open.
