Days ahead of the release of the final trailer for Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, the studio has released a massive info dump on the backstory of the movie care of a new website, 25 Moments.
The site chronicles 25 particularly important events — or moments, if you will — between the 1962 setting of X-Men: First Class and the future dystopia of 2018 as seen in Days of Future Past. The earlier tease that Magneto was responsible for the death of John F. Kennedy was just the beginning, as it turns out.
STORY: Can ‘Days of Future Past’ Save Fox’s ’X-Men’ Series? (Analysis)
Amongst the moments featured on the site are Bolivar Trask’s involvement with Richard Nixon, the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear plant meltdown causing the birth of a number of new mutants — including future X-Man Colossus — and the Mad Cow epidemic of the mid-1990s in the United Kingdom being the result of testing to “cure” the X-Gene responsible for giving mutants their abilities.
The site also explains the fates of some familiar names — Warren Worthington III, A.K.A. the Angel (from X-Men: The Last Stand) died in 2011 as the result of the Sentinels attacking an Occupy Wall Street protest, and Hank McCoy was murdered by anti-mutant protestors in 2015 — as well as laying the groundwork for some new faces in next month’s movie.
Teetering between smart-easter egg hunting for fans and awkward attempts at the kinds of real world relevancy that Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier managed through allegory and topicality, your reaction to the 25 Moments site may rely on how excited you are by the X-Franchise in general. For fans, there’s definitely a lot to get excited about.
X-Men: Days of Future Past is released May 23.
