TORONTO — Rogers Media has tapped former Fox Sports producer Gord Cutler to stick-handle its expanded NHL hockey coverage for the Sportsnet cable channel.
Cutler, who executive produced the coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics and 2012 Summer Olympics for Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium, was unveiled Thursday as senior vp NHL production at the Canadian broadcaster.
Cutler also produced Fox Sports’ NHL broadcasts and was on board for NBC‘s winter and summer Olympic Games telecasts. He will oversee on-air production related to Sportsnet’s NHL coverage.
The assignment follows Rogers Media in November 2013 inking a deal to pay the NHL $4.9 billion (CAN$5.2 billion) over 12 years for the exclusive Canadian rights to air league hockey games on all platforms.
“Gord’s extensive production résumé, which includes the NHL playoffs and several Olympic Games, combined with his tremendous passion for the game, will be integral to delivering on our stars-first production philosophy,” Scott Moore, president of Sportsnet and NHL at Rogers Media, said Thursday in a statement.
Besides its Sportsnet coverage, Rogers sublicensed all national French-language rights for NHL games to TVA and inked a second four-year sublicensing deal with the CBC to air NHL games on Saturday nights under the pubcaster’s 62-year-old Hockey Night in Canada brand.
Rogers will also follow the NFL and introduce Sunday-night hockey games north of the border.
