For the copious amount of gorgeous music they’ve released over the past decade-plus, The Shins owe a heck of a debt to Zach Braff, who featured the band on the best-selling soundtrack to his 2004 film, Garden State. A decade later, Braff is back with his second film, Wish I Was Here, and…hey, look at that, The Shins have a new song on the soundtrack! Listen to “So Now What” over at NPR.

Compared to the hushed beauty of “New Slang,” The Shins song that Natalie Portman‘s Garden State character famously told Braff’s character would “change your life, I swear,” the new song, “So Now What,” is more in line with the band’s dreamier sound on recent album Port of Morrow. The song will be featured in Wish I Was Here, which was co-written by and starring Braff as a thirtysomething dad trying to find his purpose.
“It’s no secret I am a giant fan of The Shins,” Braff told NPR. “For this film, I asked James Mercer if he would consider writing something original, inspired by his first impression of seeing the film. Not only did he say yes, but what he came back with gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. He is a savant.”
The Wish I Was Here soundtrack is due out on July 15, with the film hitting theaters in select cities three days later. Bon Iver, Cat Power, Coldplay and Gary Jules are also featured on the album.
