For those wondering why trailers for this summer’s Transformers: Age of Extinction appear to begin in a world in which Optimus Prime and the other robots in disguise have gone into hiding, a new campaign promoting the movie reveals why — and asks fans to get involved to ensure they stay underground.
A new website, TransformersAreDangerous.com, and related video (below) reposition the events of Transformers: Dark of the Moon as a 9/11-scale event that has resulted in a traumatized humanity and left the world “on high alert [as] the threat of the Transformers lingers on.” The video ends with the banners “Stay Alert, Be Vigilant, Keep Earth Human” and directs viewers to call a toll-free 855 number if they “see something.”
STORY: ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ to World Premiere in Hong Kong
At the website, there are newspaper reports of Transformer appearances across the globe as well as a slowly unfolding narrative of governments around the world passing anti-Transformer legislation in light of growing concern over the presence of the giant robots. It’s a good thing that said giant robots also can be in disguise, because it’s very clear that they’re not welcome on Earth anymore — until the start of the next movie, at least.
Directed by Michael Bay, Transformers: Age of Extinction opens June 27.
