Lifetime is on something of a hot streak with its original movies. Airing its third telepic in as many weeks, the cable network’s plan to front load the calendar year with high-profile projects seems to be paying off.
Saturday’s premiere of The Gabby Douglas Story, a biopic of sorts about the Olympic gymnast, averaged 3.8 million viewers. Lifetime likely benefited from its timing, with interest growing in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. The games officially kick off with Friday’s opening ceremony.
The Gabby Douglas Story, which features Douglas playing herself, did not match the recent highs set by fellow Lifetime telepics Flowers in the Attic (6.1 million) and Lizzie Borden Took an Ax (4.4 million) — though it now ranks as basic cable’s third-highest-rated movie of the year.
