SACRAMENTO-

A race horse named Nutmegs Davey died mysteriously Saturday night after a race, and its owner and trainer are now banned from the Cal Expo track.

According to state law, if a horse passes away at a track, the track must transport its body to a vet for a necropsy.

But according to the head of harness racing at Cal Expo, Chris Schick, owner Osmin Carrera and trainer Dario Solares didn’t tell officials that Nutmegs Davey had died. Instead, Schick says they snuck his body through a gate, past a security guard, and on to a stable in Lodi.

It’s not the first time Solares has been in trouble with the California Horse Racing Board.

In December 2010, the Board fined Solaris $500 for using a prohibited substance, drug or medication, on a horse named My Tryin’ Ryan.

It’s still unclear exactly what killed five-year-old Nutmegs Davey.

Its body is still being examined at UC Davis.

Meanwhile, race organizers at the Cal Expo track say they’ve imposed a life-time ban against Carrera and Solares.
