Sony has announced two spinoff projects from its Amazing Spider-Man franchise so far — Venom and Sinister Six — but where are all these new villains going to come from? Writer and producer Roberto Orci has been spilling some beans about that very subject.
“Oscorp plays an important part in how our villains get created, obviously, in the first [Amazing Spider-Man movie],” Orci told IGN. “Because Peter becoming Spider-Man came out of that, rather than saying, ‘And then this alien came from space,’ or whatever, they’re doing human-hybrid, weird stuff at Oscorp.”

The alien comment is a specific reference to the origin story of Venom, who has extraterrestrial origins in both the mainstream comic book and Sam Raimi movie continuity. In Marvel’s Ultimate comics, however, the character is a scientific project gone awry, similar to Orci’s suggestion.
Orci went on to suggest that Oscorp could represent “the good and the bad of science, that it can do great things, but it can also mess you up and do weird things and transform people — as all science can be used for good or bad.” Saying that “it’s nice to have [an] organizing principle,” he added that “it wasn’t like, ‘We must keep it at Oscorp.’ It flowed naturally from the story development.”
Perhaps those sneaks at additional Spider-Villain memorabilia in the Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer will be important to the overall mythology of the franchise after all…?
