Marvel Entertainment is going all in for Guardians of the Galaxy next year. Ahead of the movie’s release in August, both of the publisher’s releases for May’s Free Comic Book Day event will focus on the company’s space-faring superhero team.
Marvel last week announced the Guardians of the Galaxy Free Comic Book Day Special, which introduces two new members — Captain Marvel and Venom — to the team in a story by the writer and artist of the regular Guardians series, Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli. Doubling up on movie tie-in thrills, the issue will also feature a Spider-Man story by Dan Slott and Giuseppe Camuncoli that sets up events for the year ahead in the Superior Spider-Man series.

Today it was revealed that the Guardians would get another freebie to raise awareness of the characters — or, at least, one of them would, with Comic Book Resources reporting that Marvel will be putting out a second FCBD issue tied to the Guardians: An “all-ages” (read “kid-friendly”) Rocket Raccoon one-off issue from Joe Caramagna and Adam Archer.
Marvel has been releasing two separate giveaways for the annual free comic day promotion for some years now — many publishers, including DC Entertainment and Fantagraphics Books, do the same — but the two issues tend to feature different characters for wider appeal (This year, for example, Marvel released a preview of its Infinity event and a tie-in to the animated Hulk and the Agents of SMASH series; the year before that, a reprint of an Avengers comic and an excerpt of its Spider-Man: Season One graphic novel). The last time one property was spread across both releases was in 2010, when Iron Man was the co-star in two separate team-up issues.
Free Comic Book Day falls on May 3 next year.
