Mancuso, Rahlves Olympic memorabilia now on display in Tahoe museum

The Olympic ski outfits of Julia Mancuso and Daron Rahlves are the centerpiece of a new display at the Museum of Ski History and 1960 Winter Olympics in Tahoe City.

Museum co-founder Maryann Batiste is shown putting the finishing touches on the display at the Museum, located in the Boatworks Mall.

Olympic Valley native Mancuso, one of the most decorated female skiers in America history, donated her racing suit from the recent Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. The suit is the same one she wore in the Downhill and Super G events to win a bronze medal — her fourth Olympic medal including a gold in Torino in 2006.

Daron Rahlves — a decorated Downhill and Super G skier — donated his wind shell, racing helmet, goggles and participation medal from the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and his travel bag from the 2006 Olympics in Torino.

Our region’s Olympic Heritage and the Museum of Sierra Ski History and 1960 Winter Olympics — which our magazine wrote about HERE — features exhibits of artifacts and memorabilia from the beginning of skiing in the Sierra Nevada in the mid-19th century to the modern Olympic Winter Games.

“The exhibits, within the 1800 sq. ft. museum,  begin with an overview of ancient ski history then you travel through medieval history showing how in this period skiing was mainly used for hunting and warfare,” according to its website.

“The exhibits then lead you through modern history beginning by teaching you about the ‘father of modern skiing’ and then bringing you through the history of skiing in the Sierra.

“(Museum goers) then enter the exhibits showcasing the 1960 Winter Olympic Games. The story is told through the definitive book on the Olympics by David C. Antonucci: Snowball’s Chance – The Story of the 1960 Olympic Winter Games.”

The Museum is a public service project founded by Antonucci and Stan and Maryann Batiste, open daily from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Boatworks Mall, 760 North Lake Blvd., second floor, Tahoe City. Admission is free.
