“Long May She Wave”: a patriotic work of art
On this Fourth of July weekend, we are reminded of one of our favorite art books, Long May She Wave, a patriotic one by nationally known graphic designer Kit Hinrichs of Studio Hinrichs in San Francisco. Our magazine’s co-owner, Shannon Pelline, worked with Kit in the ’80s, then at Pentagram Design.
Published by Ten Speed Press in Berkeley, also one of our favorite publishers, Long May She Wave presents a graphic history of the American flag.
In addition to more than 500 Stars & Stripes artifacts from Kit’s private collection, the book, photographed by Terry Heffernan and written by Delphine Hirasuna, shows the role that the flag has played in American culture, both in times of war and peace.
From Civil War-era flags and Native American moccasins to political campaign buttons and original flag art, “Long May She Wave: A Graphic History of the American Flag” also is a traveling exhibit, assembling thousands of American flag-related objects and artifacts from Hinrichs’ private collection.
Together, the range of objects and memorabilia presented comprise their own genre of folk art and are a unique part of American heritage. The exhibit is now on display at the Frazier History museum in Louisville, KY.
