Sigourney Weaver has promised that she’ll appear in all three planned sequels to James Cameron‘s science fiction fantasy Avatar, despite her apparent death in the first movie. The secret to this resurrection, she teases, is transformation.
“I can’t talk about it, but my part is a little different in each one,” the actress told New York Magazine‘s Vulture about the part she’ll play in the future of Pandora following the supposed death of her character, Grace Augustine, in the 2009 feature. “I’ll transform somewhat,” she teased.
STORY: New ‘Avatar’ Trilogy to Be Filmed in New Zealand
Augustine’s return was actually set up in the original Avatar movie. Although she was shot and killed during an attack led by Stephen Lang‘s character, Colonel Quatrich, the Na’vi attempted to “upload” her soul to her Avatar as she was dying — a process that failed. Whether or not it had truly failed was left ambiguous.
Quite what that means in regard to Weaver’s commentary about transforming is unclear, although the implication seems to be that part of Weaver’s soul lives on in some form, Obi-Wan Kenobi-esque, in the future movies. Will her character get a new Avatar as a permanent home — and if so, will the permanence be one of the reasons for the transformation?
Scripts for the three Avatar sequels are currently being written, with Avatar 2 scheduled for a December 2016 release.
