STOCKTON-

A new study by Wallet Hub found Stockton was the worst city for small businesses.

It ranked 100 of the largest cities in the U.S., using ten different factors, such as net job growth, average wages and cost of living.

However, that statistic is not stopping the city from issuing new business licenses everyday. Nargis Tarin is opening up Frozen Pleasures Ice Cream and Treats in Stockton this Saturday. Knowing her city in debt, she said she is nervous, but has a plan to beat the big name stores.

“I want them to come in, and spend less, and come more,” Tarin said. “Come two to three times a week vs. just once a week because it costs a lot of money at other places.”

“In every city, you’re going to have situations where people start businesses, and there might be a backlog, especially with the city having problems financially, but I don’t believe that [wallethub.com study results] one single bit,” Douglass Wilhoit, CEO of the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce said.

Wilhoit said there were plenty of small, successful businesses in Stockton that have stood the test of time, like Angelina’s.

“We’ve been here for 38 years. And our business continues to grow, and we love Stockton,” Steve Copello, Part- Owner of Angelina’s said. “The secret for running a small business is making sure that you do everything you can for the customer.”

That was a piece of advice Tarin from the ice cream shop, took to heart.

“One hundred percent. I totally agree,” Tarin said.

The study found Minneapolis, MN was the best city for an employee of small business. California cities with the higest results were San Francisco at #6 and Los Angeles at #18. The worst ranking California cities were Bakersfield at #95, Modesto at #99, and Stockton at #100.
