SACRAMENTO-
Already this year, beef prices have seen a 10 to 20 percent increase. Experts say to expect another 10 to 20 percent before the summer is over.
“The drought is effecting all the feed prices for the beef, which, in turn, is increasing the price overall,” Mitchell Lind, with Taylor’s Market, told FOX40.
At Taylor’s Market in Sacramento, ground beef and other cuts of beef have seen an increase of more than a dollar per pound.
“We are trying to keep our prices down as long as we can for the consumer,” Lind said.
Lind says on many cuts of their meat, they are barely breaking even. They have raised prices where they have had to but are taking almost no profit on others.
“We try to hold out and not raise the prices because we have a pretty loyal customer base,” said Lind.
Lind says they order meat twice a week each time the prices goes up a bit, so they are helping their customers get creative and save money.
“Maybe smaller portion sizes, lesser known cuts of meat, cheaper cuts that you can marinade and do other things to and make them just as good,” Lind said.
Another tip to save money is to buy in bulk and freeze your meat. Cuts like ground beef lose very little quality when frozen. Other cuts do lose some quality but it might be worth it, as the price of beef continues to skyrocket.
Pork, bacon and fish have also gone up in price, while poultry and lamb have stayed about the same.
