BERLIN – The Berlin International Film Festival will embrace its darker side next year with the addition of a new Midnight Movies section highlighting genre and cult features.
The Samurai, a horror thriller from German director Till Kleinert, is the first feature picked for the Midnight Movies section, which will run under the auspices of Berlin’s Perspectives sidebar, which focuses on up-and-coming filmmakers.

Three other features and two documentaries have also been picked for the 2014 Perspectives line-up. They include Johannes Naber’s dark satire Zeit der Kannibalen (Time of the Cannibals); Jons Jonsson‘s Lamento, a drama examining survivor’s guilt after a suicide and the short Die Unschuldigen (The Innocents) from first-timer Oskar Sulowski.
The invited documentaries include Amma & Appa, director Franziska Schonenberger‘s very personal wedding video, which follows her upcoming nuptials to co-director Jayakrishnan Subramanian and the clash between Bavarian and Indian traditions; and Raumfahrer (Astronaut) by director Georg Nonnenmacher, a doc shot from the observation slit in a prison transport bus.
The complete 2014 Perspectives line-up will be announced in mid-January.
The 64th Berlin International film festival runs Feb.6-16, 2014.
