Earlier today (April 21), news broke out that an engineer who was on hand for the studio sessions during the glory days of Jay Z’s Roc-A-Fella Records was potentially involved in an extortion plot involving up to $20 million worth of master recordings.

Law enforcement in California questioned Chancey Mahan after a grand larceny complaint led them to a storage unit containing all the stolen tapes. Well Just Blaze was also present during that time a well, and he remembers Mahan to be just as much the struggle engineer as he was reported to be. In fact, as Just Blaze tells it, his eventual firing resulted in bringing Young Guru to the fold and the rest, they say, is history.

After gaining wind of the news reported, Just reflected on Mahan ruined plenty of recordings, namely plenty of records from 2000’s The Dynasty: Roc La Familia (2000-).

“Chauncey stayed effing up. Big part of the reason Hip and I brought in Guru. Ill never forget the day Chaunce stepped to Duro wanting to fight lol. This guy ruined every tape transfer for the Dynasty Album,” Just recalled. “If u listen to “get your mind right” from Dynasty, You’ll notice all the choruses after the first one fall in the wrong places. Bc Chauncey. The Dynasty intro sample flanges the entire time.. Guess why!? Chauncey.”

Police have yet to formally charge Mahan but with all the incriminating evidence and plenty of witnesses with unfavorable memories of him, it could be just a matter of time.

Read Just Blaze’s recollection and listen to the song’s he said were tainted in the gallery.. Consider it a freebie from a Hip-Hop legends memoir.
