Although Channing Tatum has yet to be officially announced in the role (nor has any casting been declared), he is thinking big for his first appearance as Gambit in Fox’s X-Men franchise. A quick appearance in an ensemble piece is not for him. Instead, he wants to redefine the entire superhero genre.
Talking to MTV about his potential debut as the fan-favorite character — X-Men executive producer Lauren Shuler Donner last month confirmed Tatum would get the role — he suggested that earlier reports that he would appear in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse might have been incorrect.
Channing Tatum to Play Gambit in X-Men Spinoff
“We’ve talked about it being a stand-alone [movie] first,” he said, adding that he hoped that the movie could “change the hero, superhero movie [dynamic].” The reason for that, Tatum suggested, was simple: The character isn’t exactly Captain America. “Gambit is not your typical hero,” he said. “He’s a thief. He walks on the gray.”
Ideally, Tatum said, he could launch Gambit as a solo character before “ultimately feather[ing] into the other ones” in the franchise, although he admitted that “the machine of the Marvel world is so ginormous that it’s literally like climbing a mountain getting one of these movies made.” Nonetheless, he said that “it’s a weird, pinching-myself moment that we’re even having the conversation.”
Whether or not Tatum appears in the movie, X-Men: Apocalypse is scheduled for a 2016 release.
