Rick Holzman has gotten a promotion. He was named general manager and executive vp of Animal Planet, Discovery Communications announced Wednesday.
In his new role, Holzman will oversee strategy and day-to-day operations for the network and will report to group president of TLC and Animal Planet, Marjorie Kaplan.

“Rick Holzman is one of the most brilliant minds in the media industry and a key driver of Animal Planet’s significant growth as an entertainment destination over the last several years,” said Kaplan, adding: “His leadership, knowledge and incredible passion for this brand make him the perfect general manager for Animal Planet.”
Holzman, who has been with the network since November 2007, most recently served as exec vp programming and scheduling for Animal Planet and Science Channel. He’s been integral to the network’s rebrand and growth over the years and has guided Animal Planet’s programming by overseeing the network’s commissioning, acquisitions, co-productions and scheduling strategy. In fact, the best performing series in network history took place during Holzman’s tenure.
Prior to joining Animal Planet, Holzman worked as vp programming and scheduling at Discovery Channel, from 2004 to 2007, where he commissioned the network’s first game show, Cash Cab.
