Legendary is getting into business with Ben Stiller.
Legendary Television and Digital has inked a multi-year deal with production company Red Hour Films, headed by Stiller and Stuart Cornfield, to develop and produce content for television and digital. The new pact marks the first deal for the recently-launched Legendary TV and Digital Media.
The new digital deal begins when Red Hour’s current pact with Paramount ends.
“All of us at Legendary are thrilled to be working with Ben, Stuart and their Red Hour team. Their comedic programming is broadly appealing, yet fulfills the edginess and irreverence that is so on brand for Legendary,” said Bruce Rosenblum, president of Legendary TV and Digital Media. “Red Hour is an ideal addition to our multi-platform efforts, as they have successfully balanced their traditional television programming with a strong track record in creating and producing digital content.”
Added Stiller: “We are very excited to partner with Legendary, though I am a little concerned that Bruce called me ‘Mr. Affleck’ when discussing the deal on the phone. Hopefully, he won’t realize he got the other Ben till after the papers are signed.”
Debbie Liebling, president of Red Hour Television, will oversee the company’s development of television programming. She helped develop South Park and oversaw development and production on Bridesmaids, The Change-Up, Borat and Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.
Mike Rosenstein, director of digital at Red Hour, will run the company’s digital content development. He and Tom Lesinski, president of Legendary Digital Media, previously worked on Burning Love and the upcoming Zoolander animated digital series.
Peter Johnson, executive vp scripted entertainment at Legendary, will also be involved with the creative.
Red Hour Television has had several shows set up at numerous cable and broadcast networks, and has had two series greenlighted: IFC’s Birthday Boys and Comedy Central’s The Meltdown With Jonah and Kumail. Red Hour Films produced Christmas Day release The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, which Stiller directed and stars in.
