OK people, this review was long overdue, but in my defense, time dragged because my dumb little masochistic brain wanted to read it twice out of its own guilty pleasure. That being said, things are as follows:
Egypt?
Check.
Futuristic Egypt?
Check.
Hot looking alien?
Check.
Hot looking, cold personality alien?
Double check.
Tough heroine?
You betcha.
Twists and turns and screaming into the pillow out of sheer bookaholic frustration?
Oh yes.
Cliffhanger ending?
Boy, do i know it.
What more can you want?
Seriously now. I loved this book. It was all honey for the Egypt lover in me and red velvet cake for the all-things-alien addict. It did help a great deal for my perpetual book-depraved skull that I have been waiting and pinning and searching for this piece of gold and shinny diamonds for the better part of the solid past months.
To put it shortly, this was my continuous reaction concerning Alekzander Brede, badass alien: photo tumblr_neypwq7UYu1u2idguo1_500.gif
It didn't help my reaction that he was a mean son of a bitch, cold on top of that, very matter of fact and to the point. Did i ever mention, that good ol' sadistic lil' me likes 'em bad boys? No? Well, here you have the confirmation. Sure, he did some nasty stuff (and i would have punched him in the face a few times for the kiddo parts), but then then he did some awful stuff (downright torture he would have got from me for the second kiddo parts), then some nasty stuff again (men, you guys really need to figure out when that organ we call a heart tries to tell you something regarding the person that is your significant other), toppled by nonredeemable stuff (i won't spoil your fun at this one), but hey, let's be honest here; or try to.
How many of us are not dead tired of all those picture perfect heroes? Real people are flawed, they have their demons and make their mistakes and have their regrets. Not everything is milk and honey or even easy. And even though most of the time i'm reading a SF novel or a Urban Fnatsy book, i want the characters to feel real, with all those small, little stuff that makes people tick. No fun reading about some perfect dude that is some knight in shinning armor 24/7 or some whinny heroine that couldn't tie her shoelaces by herself even if that was her escape from a hoard of hellhounds.
Hence, I present to you, Alekzander Brede.
Gosh, even his name is hot, alien species and all. Fangirling a bit here, don't mind me. For some reason, if this is possible, i loved Elektra even more than Alekzander himself, which usually does not happen, because well, female representative here and we have our weaknesses and those weaknesses tend to stretch towards the males in the books (sue me, i know I'm shallow).
One of the things that I simply liked about Elektra was that she was tough. She had grown up on the streets and didn't have that pampered life that breeds weakly minded people. She knew what she wanted, she was used to a rough life, she always did her best and she fought for the things that she loved. No damsel in distress waiting for her prince here. Thank God!
This was a completely refreshing read. Even though Alekzander was a total Bastard with a major "B", he had his sweet moments. Few of course, because he then remembered he was supposed to be a domineering iceberg, but they were there and in-between and all the more exciting because of it. And let me tell you something about our overbearing alien iceberg: he had .... awful parenting skills. I'm no magician with kids either, but hell, boy! easy with the emotionally unavailable kid raising. They turn into psychopaths.
I did not expect the ending though! I don't know what i'm feeling photo I dont know what im feeling.gif
Next thing i know, I'm at the final chapter, and I'm staring like a retard at my beloved kindle (Yes, I know I shouldn't have named him Deucalion), but Oh My Gosh. I was almost drumming my fingers for the expected happy ever after, all is good in the end (more or less, but decent enough with no one i cared about dying horribly) and then BAM! Shit happens, plot twists, death, then resurrected dead, then dead for good, then perhaps a silver lining, then one of those oh-my-god-it's-too-late moments.
Then me staring dejected at the final page of the book and Deucalion staring back at me pokerfaced as usual (He's a kindle, understand him a little, he has a limited range of expressions: pokerface being the only one available)
It's so good that this is a series and it will have more books, because otherwise if that was the end, I would be breaking stuff right now. Precious stuff. And I cannot afford that, because I spend all my salary on IKEA stuff and a dozen or so books from USA and I'm legitly skin-broke. Which begs the question, how will I stack enough money for the upcoming books I know I need to buy and read ASAP? Time and wallet will tell. But before that, put your paws on the book and give it a try! The only thing that would have made this book better, would have been sex scenes sprawling on entire pages (with detailed descriptions, of course), but this is just the pervert in me speaking. Pay no heed to my depraved alter ego.
Unless of course she's telling you to pick up this book.
Then you can listen to her.

I just finished reading this and reviewed on my blog. I've got to say, among great characters I join in adventures with my bowl of ice cream, there is now an Alekzander brede fighting away in his rusty machine.

I received a copy from the author. All opinions are my own.

"Besides, that's what adventure is Zander. It's fear of the unknown, of danger, of success that makes the adventure worth the time and effort. And do not forget that we control our own adventures and destiny and do no not follow or depend upon anyone for any reason"

I found this book to be incredibly more interesting than expected. They say "don't judge a book by its cover", but let's not lie, we all do it. I love finding debut or indie authors because often the case is that the book is good, yet undiscovered. Typically I would not have been intrigued by the cover and the title and I would have passed this one up, and that would have been a shame.

Let me just say, this is not typically my genre. I don't typically read about alien cross breeds and spaceship firefights, but I do love a good sci-fi, so I thought I'd give it a shot. This book was so much more than that. It was about greed, ego, protecting loved ones and fighting natural instincts to preserve ones humanity. I would say this was less of a romance and more of a love story in the end.

I started off this book feeling a little confused, as if I jumped into the middle of Star Wars and didn't know what was going on. I also felt this way when I read Six of Crows, which is one of my all time favorite fantasy novels, so I told myself to keep reading. By about 20 pages in I found myself feeling more at ease with the story, and glad I hadn't set it down.

I absolutely both loved AND hated the main characters, Elektra and Brede. They were both quite far from perfect, but they each had enough redeeming qualities, which made them lovable. At times I found myself angry or disgusted with each character, but they felt real, real people have flaws and make bad decisions. If you know me you know that I hate a hero with no flaws-- can you say BORING? Luckily this pair had plenty, Brede in particular. Being half Amphidian he was prone to more violence and less emotion than humans. This made him quite ruthless and cruel at times. It was interesting to watch as he fought against his Amphidian nature to try and retain his humanity. Sometimes I felt like Elektra was overly slutty for no reason.

"He found it so easy to hurt her. He also found that he liked to do it; so much it grew into amusement to him and it didn't help her that she could not lie to him either. He always called her out on it."

Romance between these two was complex to say the least. It was emotionally abusive and a game of hot and cold. Yet it is done artfully, so that you still seem to understand why they want each other. When Brede starts fighting against his Amphidian nature he becomes more likable, but at that point Elektra is not used to him being emotionally available.

The world building could use a little work, but it was still pretty great. There were a couple times that I noticed paragraphs that went on for a page and a half. The different alien races and different planets sounded pretty cool, but certain things could have used more description because there were spots that I found myself confused, but for the most part I think it was edited well. The plot and pacing were both good, I read this book in a day. It kept me captivated. The climax was built up and executed very well. Which is something I see a lot of debut and indie authors struggle with, but in this book it was crafted beautifully.

The ending left me hungry for more. I have no doubt that these characters could continue having incredibly interesting adventures and I hope to be along for the ride in the next book.

I received an 'Advanced Copy' of this novel from Author, P.I. Barrington.

Earth, as we once knew it, is no longer. The year is 2107 and a new breed of human is walking the planet Earth and ruling other planets unheard of throughout the universe. This is where you'll meet, Alekzander Brede, an Amphidian from the planet Amphidia. He's half human and half Amphidian. His strength is beyond human and his skill at killing without emotion runs deep within him. He doesn't have a care in the world and roams the various planets as if he is the king of them all. There's a special artifact that many are seeking, and Alekzander has been hired to find it. What the artifact contains, he doesn't know, but what he does know is, there are people and/or things willing to kill him to get it. Narita Sabbad was a very rich earthly woman, living in New Cairo, with beauty to melt any man's heart, and when she set her sights on Alekzander with all his muscles and attractive good looks, their fate was forever sealed. Or so Alekzander thought.

What Alekzander didn't count on was having to deal with a rather pesty kid named Elecktra. She was madly in love with Alekzander from the time she was a small child. She was an orphan living on the streets by any means necessary, usually stealing from others in order to survive. Elecktra and Alekzander's paths crossed often throughout her growing up years. Her home was called The City of the Dead where the underworld and the dregs of humanity currently resided. She often found herself living in Garbage City also in New Cairo. Every time Alekzander was about to board his Scythe to head out on his adventure of finding this artifact known as the Vessel of Beket-Re, he discovered Elecktra stowed away. As much as it pained him to deal with her, he let her crash there for a little bit, but instead of sleeping in the quarters he advised her, she ended up sleeping with him. Their love making should never have happened, especially since he had such strong feelings for Narita who was a goddess in her own right.

Elecktra ended up going to the Under Prison, overseen by Narita Sabbad, Alekzander's lady love. When Elecktra got out, she fled New Cairo. What Alekzander had no idea of, she was carrying their child. A few years passed, and when Alekzander finally caught up to Elecktra, he immediately noticed a little tyke who looked identical to him. He instantly knew that child was his son. Yes, Alekzander was correct. His son's name was Zander Brede and he was amazingly smart and strong just like his father. To punish Elecktra for not advising him they had a child together, he punished her by taking the only thing she loved and cherished away from her. Alekzander had no idea what an important role the Vessel of Beket-Re would play for his life. And from that point, it sets off a chain of events that will leave most readers in awe.

Alekzander Brede was a very cruel character. He mistreated Elecktra terribly and she took his verbal abuse based on the love she always held for him. This isn't like most sci-fi books I've read, but it wasn't bad at all. I felt the story started off a bit slow and with all the planets and different type of people living, it can get confusing to keep up with them all. By the time I reached about 30% of the book, the story really took off for me. This is a love story with it's ups and downs in a world like Star Trek or Buck Rogers or Fringe all mixed up into one. I think most sci-fi readers will enjoy this story. This novel was well written from a technical standpoint, but as I mentioned it starts out a little slow, but eventually picks up speed which is what any reader wants and expects. Well done, P.I. Barrington!

Crisscrossing paths between worlds, Alekzander Brede and Elektra Tate are an unlikely duo. He is a mercenary, bred with superior alien and human genes; she is a blonde-haired thief with a crackshot and undying adoration for her only friend. A superior crossbreed, Alekzander is cruel and emotionless - the killer-for-hire has few friends and many enemies. An abandoned child living on the streets, Elektra fights to survive the never-ending abuse and garbage. Their love-hate relationship is a force to be reckoned with as they face their fates.

Due to the story being the first of The Brede series, the author allots time for character introductions and setting depictions until she shifts gears and charges forward with an intense and fantastic ending.

Ms. Barrington's heroines captivate me with their feisty spirits. Similar to the female protagonist in Isadora DayStar, Elektra Tate embodies the same 'scrappy dog' verve Ms. Barrington is known for penning; she fights for her life amidst those who would rather use her, abuse her, and kill her. Fight on, Elektra!

*A Copy of this Book Was Given To Me By The Author In Exchange For An Honest Review*

Welcome, P.I. Barrington (Patti) to the ranks of writers who are worthy of the description sci-fi writer. This is not her first published book and serves to confirm this.
You will love Elektra and have a love/hate relationship with Alekzander as the story unfolds and you learn how life is (could easily be) in the future where this tale is set. There is action enough to satisfy anyone and the personal relationships are well described, with conversation flowing as it would in life. The ending leaves you, the reader, eager to start on Book Two (which is as it should be.)

*I recieved a copy from the author for a review*

Sorry for the late review but i read this book twice 1. Because I loved it and wanted to.
2. Because I wanted to write a good review.

I LOVED THIS BOOK.
It's set in the year 2107, Egypt and its awesome. (I'm not gonna write a detailed summary because I tend to spoil the book).

The writing was great, The pacing was very very consistent. And the language was also great. I could not spot any flaws, it was the perfect sci-fi novel and kept me wanting more of its world.

Overall, it was an AMAZING read and would recommend everybody to read it and go on this awesome sauce adventure that I got to go on.

This dystopian read shows great imagination, colour and depth. I can recommend it to anyone who would like an out-of-the-way setting and wants to mix people from other planets in among Earth people.

We meet Elektra Tate in New Cairo, in a city where poverty and density of population are even greater than today; it's hard to imagine how enough food gets to the populace. Earth's economy we are told has imploded, though we don't know why. Probably the Earth people we meet don't know and the off-worlders don't care. I loved the imagery of three-mile-high skyscrapers following the introduction of a new metal called Minidium; this is an Everest base camp height and of course most of the people in the building are not living at this height but at lower levels. Meanwhile the wealthy have taken over pyramids, or pyramid shaped buildings. Contrasts abound.

Elektra is a petty thief, blonde hair making her unusual, and she's like everyone's idea of an annoying little sister at the start. She follows one off-worlder around, Alekzander Brede, hoping to be useful to him and gain his support. These tall, strong off-worlders can interbreed with people if they so choose, and Brede is a genetic mix though he doesn't like admitting to it. Brede is too busy dodging numerous assassins and making design improvements to his spacecraft to be friendly to Elektra, but he gets used to having her around.

I don't want to go into even as much of the plot as is in the blurb, because it gives away the story, but mainly we see Elektra grow up through a few stages of struggle and learning, pain and loss. She finds out what it is to love and to fear for someone's life besides her own. By the end she is really someone to admire and a thorough survivor.

The reasons I am not giving The Brede Chronicles more stars, despite the action, human dramas and well-realised varied settings, are twofold. First, the named, speaking characters are very few for a book this length, with only two women, utter contrasts. We could see the book as a script for a play. Second, the formatting and proofreading in my copy are less than ideal, which distracted me a lot and kept drawing me out of the immersion in the adventure and back onto the printed page. This is not beyond resolving and I hope it can be remedied for other readers.

In conclusion I would look forward to the next instalment, especially as we are left at a moment of high drama (or curtain fall in a Jacobean tragedy).

The Brede Chronicles - Book 1 - Review by Martha A Cheves, Author of: Stir, Laugh, Repeat; Think With Your Taste Buds; A Book and A Dish

Elektra Tate who, abandoned, grew up in the streets of New Cairo, probably all human thereby reducing her to the lowest strata of society; the proscribed citizens. She lived as a child in Garbage City, the filthy area reserved for the poorest of the poor of New Cairo. Garbage City resulted as overpopulation of the country escalated unrestrained in recent centuries causing its citizens to take refuge anywhere they could. Her current abode was an ancient tomb in one of New Cairo's cemetery cities that even the residents of Garbage City avoided. And then she meets.....

Alekzander Brede whose earth father and amphidian mother's marriage produced him with full citizen rights on each planet and most planets in between. Any other rights he did not have he merely took. There were others like him; perhaps not exactly the same mix but close enough to make them all humanoid, enhancing the economic state of New Cairo. It also gave him a taste for earth women, the more human the better.

I've never been fond of futuristic books and I can't say that I've ever read a book that made me dislike one of the main characters as much as I found myself disliking Alekzander Brede. His character is of a cruel man who enjoys hurting Elektra Tate more than anything else he does in life. There were times I would wish the author would kill him off and bring in a better, more likable character. Well, that didn't happen and I knew it wouldn't because this is the 1st book in a series of books titled The Brede Chronicles. So, how is she going to make me like him, must a little? Well, she did, but not until the end of the book and by the end I mean the last 2 pages! And she did this in a way that I'm anticipating the reading of Book 2 and will impatiently be waiting for it to come out.

This book is FULL of action and a very hard book to put down!

This review first published on Oh Just Books.

This book was a futuristic fantasy with an amazingly detailed universe that took my breath away. P I Barrington has written this book beautifully and it is refreshing to see that she did not go with the cliché story arc of bad boy meets the girl and then suddenly everyone falls into a bed of roses. The story has really strong characters with complex characters and deep motivations that played a role into their actions. This contributed to a rich and intricate plot. The central characters are Brede, a harsh and dangerous hit man and Elektra, a resourceful and too-stubborn-to-give-up orphan girl.

Brede is almost an anti-hero. He is cold, calculating and vengeful. I’m glad that he did not turn into one of those characters who turned into mush as soon as he realized he had feelings for a girl. To the contrary, he became even more complex. To me, Brede seemed like a hard man to understand but I always believed that books are the mediums that you can use to live a hundred lives; they let you feel what you may never get a chance to feel in your real life.

Alekzander Brede, half-human half- Amphidian travels the universe flying from planet to planet finding relics for others. Alekzander is a citizen on both planet Earth and Amphidian. Alekzander is far stronger than any human.

Narita Sabbad hires Alekzander to find a relic for her. Narita is not the only one looking for the relic and is willing to kill to get their hands on it. Narita has also set her eyes on Alekzander and will stoop to any level to get her hands on him and make him hers forever or at least until she gets bored with him. Narita like Alekzander has a very cold, dark heart and never show any feelings or emotions ever.

Elecktra has lived on New Cairo all her life as far as she knows that is. She was abandon in Garbage City when she was very small and learned to steal food just so she could eat. The people of Garbage City knew what she did but none were willing to take her in as their own so they let her take what she needed to survive. One day Elecktra was cast out of Garbage City and told never to return so she took up residence in The City of the Dead.

Elecktra met Alekzander when she was small and ever since that first meeting she has followed him around everywhere she showing up out of nowhere when he expects it the least giving him a tap on the shoulder. Alekzander has always been nice to her or at least as kinder to her than he has ever been to anyone else. Sometimes Elecktra would help him out on a job but then there were other times when she would stowaway on his Scythe.

Narita was jealous of Elecktra and wanted her out of the way so she could have Alekzander all to herself and made plans to have her taken care of. Her plan worked for a while but what she didn’t count on was Alekzander one day going to look for Elecktra and what he found cost Elecktra to lose something close and dear to her heart. But Elecktra was not going to give up what she lost and vowed that one day she would find him and take back what it took from her.

The Brede Chronicles was a very engrossing read that keep you glued to your seat racing from one planet to another trying to figure out where the characters were going to end up next and what kind of trouble they were going to be in when they finally managed to settle down a bit. My favorite character was Elecktra she seemed to be the only one with any kind of feelings and could make you feel what they were feeling and wanting to know more about the story and kept you going. The ending just blew me away it was one that I never saw coming and made me so sad. I can’t wait to check out the next book for more adventures with the crew of The Brede Chronicles.

I would recommend The Brede Chronicles to anyone who may be a fan of Star Wars or Star Trek.

They let you expand your emotional spectrum, that is, if you are a deep reader who tries to resonate with the characters that you read about, if you emotionally invest yourself in the words on the pages. That being said, Brede was an interesting character to read about.

Elektra, on the other hand was the opposite of Brede in many ways. She is a stray orphan girl who survived in extreme conditions. Her character development has been amazing from the sweet and shy girl who was crushing on the emotionally unavailable, tough guy to a very determined and motivated woman driven by revenge. I felt sad for her, cheered for her and felt proud of her during her journey in this book.

The other characters in the book, even the ones that seemed like they were essential to the plot, were just that - essential to the plot. And the plot was this twisted love story between Brede and Elektra. Everybody else in this book helped intensify the drama around these two characters. Compared to them, everyone else faded into the background for me.

However, I wish there were more moments of happiness in this book. Not that I'm a sucker for happy endings but making the reader smile once or twice would've been nice. Also, the story was being told from the perspective of too many people and sometimes it was difficult to differentiate between certain characters, because honestly speaking, everybody wanted to kill someone throughout the book. But this might have been because I read the story on a soft copy, so I won't hold it against the book much.

A few words of warning though. This book is not for the soft hearted or squeamish. There is violence, a few graphic scenes and healthy amount of misery from various characters. So be warned!

Well talk about timing, on a few of the Facebook pages I frequent there has been a lot of talk about authors killing off beloved characters. I know I have wanted to go through some of my favorite characters closets and throw away all of their red shirts, yes that is a Star Trek thing. P.I. Barrington the author of The Brede Chronicles Book One has on the other hand, had me wanting to one click a full wardrobe of red shirts for her main character Alekzander Brede. I am not sure this was her intended emotion for her leading male but, well done P.I. Barrington!

I am going to get the bad out of the way to begin with because it is; I feel personal peeves with this story. I really do wish authors of Science Fiction would add a glossary to their stories. It would help with stepping right into the world they have created. As I read there were a few places where the story changed either to new characters or to the past and there were no page breaks to indicate the change. Now on to the fun stuff.

The Brede Chronicles Book One takes place in New Cairo 2107. I love stories that take place in Egypt. There is just something about the history and people of this part of the world that I can’t resist. P.I. Barrington has combined the past and future in this story that is believable. I feel this makes becoming invested in the characters so much easier. Like our leading lady Elektra Tate.

Elektra is full human and was abandoned on the streets on New Cairo when she was a child reducing her to one of the proscribed citizens, the lowest level of society. She has dose what she needs to, to survive, lie, cheat and steal. She has also taken a liking to Alekzander Brede. They have one of those love/tolerate/hate relationships that they both use to benefit themselves. You will enjoy watching this but it is also one of the reasons I really wanted Alekzander to wear a red shirt. Elektra is a true underdog and watching her character grow and develop made me love her to pieces. I think there is more to her story than we have been told in book one I will be keeping my eyes open for book two which is under way as you read this.

I’d received a copy of this book through an internet giveaway and the following is my honest opinion.

This book is one which I didn’t really know what to expect when I became to read it. A dystopian story at its core, set in the earth’s future in the year 2017, where the overpopulation has spread throughout the planet. And I found it interesting that Ms. Barrington had chosen to set her story in New Cairo, and that references are made to her home being called the City of the Dead. But then, again, the artifact which plays a significant is called the Vessel of Beket-Re seems to harken back to the ancient Egyptians and the pyramids.

There is a relationship which goes back years between Alekzander Brede, an amphidian from the planet Amphidia and Elecktra, who’s ekes a living on the streets by any means necessary, including stealing from others. However, it’s been she who has been madly in love with him, and he has viewed her as a pesky kid.

Yet one day she conceives his son, without telling him. And years later when he sees that child and recognizes he’s the father, his anger takes over for her not telling him and he kidnaps her child.

This starts a game of cat and mouse game between Earth and his home planet of Amphidia. While he has a warped sense of vengeance towards Elecktra, she will do anything she has to in order to save or son; as well as a search for the highly prized artifact which no one seems to know the power of.

The most distracting part I found in reading the book has been the lack of a justified right margin which, I find, makes a book easier to read, as a reader’s eyes knows when to stop on each line as they read each page.

Aside from this distraction, I’m giving this book 4 STARS for the enjoyable, page-turning experience I had.

The economy of Earth has crumbled to nothing and most of the planet has been sold off to wealthy aliens, making the New Middle East the primary center for the dregs of humankind. Humans are considered the lowest form of life - even half-breeds of human-Amphidian hold a higher status. Alekzander Brede is one such hybrid and a hired gun, paid by anyone with wealth to eliminate "obstacles" and seek out treasures. On this job, he's seeking an ancient Egyptian Treasure.

Brede's personality has been influenced by his mixed heritage, creating a man who views any weakness as a fair reason to die. He enjoys watching as well as causing the suffering of others, including the women he is attracted to. He is friendless and his family members despise him. He has learned not to care about killing and even threatens his own son with death for his behaviour. Brede is not a protagonist one will feel sorry for, love, or empathise with, and at times he acts as the antagonist in his own life story.

Because he is always at war with someone and has few (if any) he can call friends, Brede lacks any sort of understanding of how to behave like anything other than the thug is hired to be. He fails at romantic relationships and at parenting. Occasionally, but rarely, he shines with a moment of sophistication and understanding but for the most part is no more than the sum of his parts.

The author gifted a copy of this book to me, for which I am thankful. This was an absolute delight to read. It’s been a while since I’ve read a science fiction story that has all the elements of good story telling. A not so nice leading man whom you love to hate. Or at least dislike intensely as you groan and gnash your teeth through how he treats Elektra Tate, as he seems to enjoy hurting her, but yet can’t figure out why.

But Brede is tasked with finding a very old object that is desired by many willing to kill to get it, which makes for some amazing firefights, more than one betrayal, lost and found love, and a bit like Pandora’s Box, hope keeps springing up in the oddest places.

If you enjoy good science fiction with a bit of romance (not much, but some), then you will definitely enjoy “The Brede Chronicle”, as it’s well done and definitely worth the read. Although I do have to admit, after reading it, I’m left with many questions as to the backstory of both characters (among other things) and I’m hoping those are answered in subsequent stories. Yes?
