With this week’s release of Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel Studios will double its lineup of superheroes on the big screen. So what are the chances of the Guardians meeting up with their Earth-bound counterparts, the Avengers? According to the cast and crew of Guardians, pretty good.
“We talked about all sorts of possibilities [for a crossover] and I kind of know what the basic plan is,” director James Gunn told Yahoo Movies. “That could or could not include a couple of Avengers and a couple of Guardians meeting up, or all of the Avengers and all of the Guardians. But we do inhabit the same universe and they’re pretty big personalities that are likely to, at some point or another, run into each other.”

Chris Pratt, however, is a little less convinced that such a meeting would be a good idea. “If you go from five characters and you add another five characters, that’s 10 characters. That can be very difficult,” he told Yahoo Movies, whereas Vin Diesel said that he thinks “Marvel will have a lot of options after this movie, and one of the options will be integrating teams … I think the discussion’s already been had.”
There is already a similarity between Joss Whedon’s first Avengers movie and Gunn’s first Guardians, in that they share a behind-the-scenes villain in Thanos (as played in the more recent movie by Josh Brolin). In comic book continuity, Iron Man spent some time with the Guardians in deep space, but whether either connection brings the movie casts together anytime soon remains to be seen.
Guardians of the Galaxy is released Aug. 1.
