SACRAMENTO-

Members of the Recreation Commission voted unanimously to approve the California State Parks and Railroad Museum’s Old Sacramento State Historic Park General Plan.

The most contested part of this plan was the proposal of two tourist train excursion lines- the first from Old Sacramento to the Sacramento Zoo, and the second from Meadowview to the town of Hood. At the last public meeting on April 15, the segment between the Sacramento Zoo and Meadowview was taken out of the plan. This section of the tracks is not owned by State Parks, but by Sacramento Regional Transit, and is heavily populated with residents.

At Friday’s teleconference meeting, seven out of seven commissioners voted to adopt the general plan, and approve the two lines.

“We’re excited that we have a vision that we can move forward with,” Dana Jones, District Superintendent of California State Parks, said.

Karen Lizarraga, who lives near the future Zoo Line, was not thrilled by the decision.

“I’m not really used to having people looking out their windows, like we are on display,” Lizarraga said.

She recently moved her large maple planters behind her window to block the view of railroad lookie-loos.

While the plan was approved, there is still no funding source. The first step is for the State Parks to do several project level studies to figure out costs and plans, before starting any construction. They plan to have more public comment hearings in the future.
