This story first appeared in the May 9 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.
They’ve been punched in court, threatened by venomous studio executives and, on occasion, thanked at the Oscars. The people on THR‘s seventh annual Power Lawyers list tell stories that reflect their huge influence over how Hollywood operates.
From dealing with headline-grabbing celebrity scandals (Marty Singer is defending X-Men director Bryan Singer in a civil case alleging sex with an underage boy) to helping stars score $20 million paydays (as Steve Warren did for The Wolf of Wall Street‘s Leonardo DiCaprio), they all have a major impact on how Hollywood goes about its business.
This year, to help better get to know the men and women behind the negotiations, arbitrations and lawsuits that make the town run, THR added new questions to the mix. Along with their cases and deals from the past 12 months, the lawyers were asked about the mentors who inspired them, their greatest career moments, the best arguments they’ve made and the biggest Hollywood tantrums they’ve witnessed (who knew the legal profession was, at times, a full-blown contact sport — fisticuffs and all?).
