DirecTV has set the cast for the first of Neil LaBute‘s short-film series 10×10.
The Office‘s Jenna Fischer, In Plain Sight‘s Frederick Weller, Young Adult‘s Louisa Krause, Luck‘s Richard Kind and Who’s the Boss?‘s Judith Light will star in the first set of films.
Each of the series of 10, 10-minute short films — written, directed and produced by LaBute (In the Company of Men) — features one actor telling his/her story directly to the viewer, breaking the fourth wall.
Each film explores the nature of human relationships, specifically themes of love and loss, as told by characters at different stages in their lives. Weller becomes a 30-year-old man recounting a fantasy about a woman he sat next to on a plane. Fischer will play a 40-ish woman recounting how she fled an abusive marriage and rediscovered love. Krause plays a young woman who reveals intimate details about her sex life and how it affects her self-esteem. Kind will portray a man in his 50s discussing his thoughts on marriage. Light becomes a woman in her 60s recalling a missed opportunity for love in her past.
“I feel so fortunate to have enlisted such wonderful actors for this, many of which I’ve had the pleasure of working with on the New York stage,” LaBute said. “It takes an exceptional talent to do this kind of acting — straight to the camera and without any edits. It’s like walking a tightrope without a net.”
LaBute, who previously wrote DirecTV’s original scripted series Full Circle, executive produces the series alongside Andrew Carlberg and Tim Harms.
Casting for the remainder of the films in 10×10 will be announced at a later date. Production will begin in January in Los Angeles. The series will air on DirecTV’s Audience Network in 2014.
