Brittany Murphy‘s saga continues long after her death.
A two-hour television movie, The Brittany Murphy Story, will premiere Saturday, Sept. 6, on Lifetime, the network announced Tuesday. It is the first long-form scripted project about the actress, who died nearly five years ago at 32.
Amanda Fuller (Last Man Standing, Grey’s Anatomy) will portray Brittany Murphy, with Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks, Ray Donovan) set to play her mother, Sharon Murphy.
The movie will recount the story of Brittany Murphy’s younger years, including her mother’s efforts to turn her talented daughter into a star in the 1980s and ’90s, and then leads up to her death. It will also touch on the aftermath, when her mother dealt with claims that her daughter’s death was not accidental.
While Lifetime has not revealed the source of the script material, a spokesperson for Sharon Murphy has said she was not consulted for the movie and has not cooperated with the production in any way.
Brittany Murphy began her acting career in television before going on to star in films, which included Clueless, Girl Interrupted and 8 Mile. She died Dec. 20, 2009, and her husband, Simon Monjack, died five months later. The coroner ruled that both had died from pneumonia and other causes.
Aug. 12, 9:58 a.m. A previous version of this story incorrectly pictured Amanda Schull as the actress playing Murphy, not Amanda Fuller. THR regrets the error.
