Cunningham 3D, a 3D dance documentary on legendary choreographer Merce Cunningham, won this year’s best pitch award at the 3D Content Financing Market, a meeting of independent producers, distributors and financiers, in Liege, Belgium.
The project from Alla Kovgan, modeled in part on Pina, Wim Wenders‘ Oscar-nominated 3D documentary on the late choreographer Pina Bausch, is being planned as U.S.-French co-production between Chance Operations and Arsam International. Kovgan is attached to direct with Kelly Gilpatrick (Howl) set to produce and with a planned budget of around $2.4 million.
Heart Core, a feature project from Polish filmmaker Grzegorz Korczak, received a special mention from the 3DFM jury for its innovative use of 3D technology. The drama, budgeted at $1.16 million (€840,000) aims to use 3D to deliberately distort viewers’ sight, making them go nearly blind to experience the film’s story of a seeing-impaired teenager trying to earn money for eye surgery.
The 3D Content Financing Market, now in its third year, is backed by Belgium’s regional government of Wallonia and organized by Berlin-based financing consultancy organization peacefulfish. The 2013 edition, for the first time, invited independent 3D projects from outside Europe to pitch to financiers and co-production partners over 3-days of conferences, panel discussions and one-on-one sessions.
