Why Do Sports Make Men Buy Sex Toys?

For dudes all around the world, a major sporting event is an immersive experience. Not only does watching the big game require an unbreakable time commitment, it also tends to demand a certain amount of physical exertion. The question is: After running to the nearest watering hole, finding prime seating, cheering, booing, drinking and snacking, do guys have anything left in the tank for the bedroom? Apparently not.

According to recent data published by LELO, a leading designer of intimate lifestyle products, men buy more sex toys for their female partners leading up to major sporting events. The company states that while their product sales on an average day are split 50/50 between the sexes, when the Super Bowl or NBA finals roll around, men are responsible for about 74% of online purchases.

The folks at LELO claim that from now until the World Cup opening ceremony on June 12, four out of five sex toys sold from their website will have been purchased by men. So, what’s the deal? LELO calls this phenomenon “Brownie Sports Points.” In anticipation of not spending as much time (or energy) with their lady friends during mega-important sporting matches, men tend to buy their significant others premium sex toys, encouraging them to take part in a different kind of excitement during the big game.

Steve Thomson, the brand’s Global Marketing Manager, says, “In the days before a big event, men are visiting the site less than usual but buying twice as much, and we know it’s not for themselves.” Thomson claims that during these periods, sales shift from items designed to please both parties involved to more female friendly, “DIY” models.

So ladies, if you’re reading this, at least try to act surprised if you receive a sexy gift from your partner this week. They just want both of you to feel good about watching the game.
