RANCHO CORDOVA –

On the Sunday before Christmas, the Covered California Call Center parking lot is filled with cars.

Behind these windows on the second floor, employees are taking calls, signing people up for Covered California.

The deadline is tomorrow—which is why Covered California is hoping to get as many people like Ernesto Montano on the phone as possible.

“I had it before but because scoliosis is not a disability they cut me off,” Montano said.

Before that he had health insurance via his mother.  But now, the 22-year-old who has scoliosis is looking for employment, and health insurance.

Montano, without insurance for three years, waited until the last minute to sign up on his iPhone. Without a regular income, money has been too tight.
