PM guarantees Enemalta employees will not be forced to work abroad

Malta Independent Thursday, 24 April 2014, 11:08 Last update: about 11 years ago

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat today reiterated that Enemalta workers will not lose their jobs, salaries or work conditions.

Speaking during a visit to the Marsa power station and head offices, Dr Muscat also said that, if the PN was still in power these workers would be trying to find another job. Workers will not be forced to work abroad, but they will have the opportunity to do so, if they so wish. Through Enemalta’s partnership with Electrogas and Shanghai Electric Power, a number of overseas vacancies will be available, but if not enough Enemalta employees apply a general call for employment will be issued.

The Prime Minister said that Enemalta’s partnership will result in a €1 billion investment in energy generation but energy distribution will also be modernized. “Enemalta is now stable,” the Dr Muscat said. “We have not only saved the company but also reduced energy tariffs. We are turning a wreck into an economic motor. They said it was impossible but we are proving them wrong.”

Dr Muscat said that this was very positive news for the Maltese economy, especially when coupled with the news that Malta has reduced its deficit to below 2.8% of GDP. “We reduced income tax and energy tariffs, introduced free childcare, we did not raise taxes and we are also refunding VAT paid on vehicle registration tax. But we still managed to bring the country’s finances in check.”

Despite all the good work, much remains to be done, and the government aims to make Enemalta a good example for other ailing companies.

Charles Mangion resigns, replaced by acting Chairman

In the meantime, Health and Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi, who was also present for the visit announced that Charles Mangion has now resigned as Enemalta Chairman since he was again elected to Parliament. Architect Joe Ellul Vincenti has been appointed as acting Chairman.

Dr Mizzi again explained that energy tariffs for households were reduced this year and tariffs for industry will be cut in 2015. He also noted that the gas-fired power station project is “on track.”

Marsa, which has borne the brunt of heavy pollution for decades, will benefit from a regeneration project.
