HOT STUFF: There’s nothing like a live performance on American Idol to lift a song or an album up the charts, whether you’re a veteran of the series or a new act. Phillip Phillips and Kodaline, fresh from appearances on last week’s results show, both benefit from being seen by millions of viewers across the nation.
Phillips performed his new single, “Raging Fire,” and as a result, that song debuts on five charts this week, including the Hot 100, where it bows at No. 58. It is also a new entry on Hot Digital Songs (No. 17), Hot Digital Tracks (No. 15), Pop Digital Songs (No. 6) and Adult Top 40 (No. 36). The fact that “Raging Fire” debuts on airplay as well as sales charts is a good indication it could be Phillips’ third big hit, following “Home” and “Gone, Gone, Gone.” The latter track rules for a fourth week on Adult Contemporary Recurrents while the former rebounds on that same survey, 14 to 13.
“Home” has topped 11 Billboard charts: Rock Digital Songs, Hot Digital Songs, Hot Digital Tracks, Triple A, Triple A Audience, Adult Top 40, Adult Contemporary, Adult Contemporary Audience, Mainstream Top 40 Recurrents, Adult Top 40 Recurrents and Adult Contemporary Recurrents. “Gone, Gone, Gone” has achieved pole position on eight Billboard surveys: Triple A, Triple A Audience, Triple A Recurrents, Adult Contemporary, Adult Contemporary Audience, Adult Top 40 Recurrents, Hot 100 Singles Airplay Recurrents and Adult Contemporary Recurrents.
Phillips’ first album, The World from the Side of the Moon, also improves following his Idol visit. The set re-enters the Billboard 200 at No. 107, Top Current Albums at No. 94 and Top Rock Albums at No. 26.
While they’ve had No. 1 success at home, Dublin-based Kodaline was mostly unknown in the U.S. prior to their Idol performance, with only a brief flirtation with the Billboard charts. This week is a different story. “All I Want,” the song that the band performed on Idol, debuts at No. 30 on Hot Rock Songs, No. 26 on Rock Digital Songs and No. 24 on Alternative Digital Songs. The parent album, In a Perfect World, debuts on The Billboard 200 at No. 89, Alternative Albums at No. 16 and Top Rock Albums at No. 22. The set re-enters two other Billboard charts, where it reaches new peak positions. On Top Independent Albums, In a Perfect World returns at No. 19 and on Top Current Albums the set is back at No. 80.
Unlike Jake Bugg, who slammed Idol for being “cruel” and a “dream-smasher” after his guest appearance, the four members of Kodaline turned out to be gracious guests. Despite being on the record for saying that The X Factor “isn’t the right way to go” for an artist who has “something to say,” no one in Kodaline has said a bad word about Idol. Before they became known as Kodaline, they appeared on an Irish TV talent competition show, You’re a Star, under the name 21 Demands. Following their run on that series, they topped the singles chart in Ireland in 2007 with “Give Me a Minute.”

‘SEE YOU’ AGAIN: Scotty McCreery’s “See You Tonight” is still rising on the multi-genre Radio Songs chart, where it’s up 32 to 31. On three other charts the single is standing pat. It’s a push at No. 10 on Hot Country Songs, No. 15 on Country Digital Songs and No. 8 on Country Airplay.
BITS AND PIECES: Danny Gokey’s “Hope in Front of Me,” which has already appeared on a pair of Christian charts, adds a third one as it debuts at No. 50 on Christian Digital Songs… on that same chart, Mandisa’s “Overcomer” rebounds 6 to 5 in its 35th week… Candice Glover’s single “Cried” is up 22 to 20 on Adult R&B… also on Adult R&B, Ruben Studdard’s remake of Donny Hathaway’s “Love, Love, Love” rises 28 to 27… Lucy Hale’s “You Sound Good to Me” climbs 58 to 54 on Country Airplay… Guy Sebastian’s “Like a Drum” continues its upward movement on Hot Dance Club Play, improving 33 to 27… Lee DeWyze’s “Fight” spends another week on Adult Top 40, where it ranks No. 39… Keith Urban’s “Cop Car” maintains at No. 3 on Country Digital Songs while moving up on Hot Digital Songs (32 to 28), Hot Country Songs (8 to 6), Country Streaming Songs (10 to 8) and Country Airplay (17 to 15).
