It started with Alright, Alright, Alright and ended with a True Detective joke that could’ve hit close to home.
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson were just bantering onstage at the Emmys — until a plagiarism flap about the acclaimed HBO show was brought up.
“I’m grateful you had all the plagiarized lines,” Harrelson quipped.
“Was that too much of an inside joke?” McConaughey quickly added with a smile. The duo moved on to presenting the nominees for outstanding lead actor in a miniseries or movie.
So, what was that all about?
In early August, detailed allegations surfaced online that claimed the writing and dialogue in the show matched up with Thomas Ligotti‘s novel The Conspiracy Against the Human Race and other works.
“Nothing in the television show True Detective was plagiarized,” creator Nic Pizzolatto said in a lengthy Aug. 7 statement to The Hollywood Reporter in response to the claims.
“Exploring and engaging with ideas and themes that philosophers and novelists have wrestled with over time is one of the show’s many strengths — we stand by the show, its writing and Nic Pizzolatto entirely,” read HBO’s statement at the time.
