SACRAMENTO-

A late-night robbery at a grocery store scared several Easter weekend shoppers.

At around 10:40 pm Saturday, three masked men entered Bel Air Supermarket on Fruitridge Road, demanding money. Sacramento Police said two of the men were wielding guns.

FOX40 spoke to witnesses who said the three were wearing surgical masks, and entered through the side dock entrance.

“Your grocery store that you’ve been going to for years and years? I mean, come on… that’s crazy,” said regular shopper Karen Reyes said.

This Bel Air store has a security guard on duty every day, during the afternoon and evening hours. However, Fox 40 was told the attempted robbery occurred in the few minutes he was taking a break.

Witnesses said the perpetrators seemed like “amateurs.” They said the three seemed to hesitate when they saw several last-minute Easter shoppers still at the store, 20 minutes to close.

“Through our investigation, we found they didn’t end up robbing or stealing from the store. But they did steal from a customer,” Jared Kaiser of the Sacramento Police said.

Witnesses said they stole a little over $100 from one customer’s wallet, and injured a male employee in the process. We are told the employee is now doing well.

Within minutes, police said the men fled in a black sedan that was parked near the docking area.

Bel Air, their security company, and Sacramento Police are looking through security footage to find the men.

Shoppers like Reyes said, incidents like this make them rethink their choice of shopping at this location in the future.

“I’m terrified,” Reyes said. “It makes me not want to come here again.”

The men have not been arrested. Bel Air was not available for comment.
