It’s the eternal question for movies and other brands seeking to make an impression at San Diego Comic-Con: What can we do to get noticed? In the past, answers to that question have included “covering an entire hotel in a banner” and “constructing a massive temporary structure to convince people that they want to see Ender’s Game.” This year, however, Pizza Hut and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles might have found the ideal solution.
The food chain and Paramount Pictures have partnered to bring what is described as “an enormous live-action Pizza Thrower” to Comic-Con, standing an impressive 12 feet tall and 9 feet wide, with a tower that rotates a cannon 16 feet long through 180 degrees allowing Con-goers to, yes, shoot pizzas at stand-ins for the Ninja Turtles’ enemies (OK, so they’re fake pizzas, but still).

The thrower was developed by Synn Labs, and was built using the chassis of an old pick-up truck that’s been heavily modified — including being painted with a “pizza-resistant finish” — for the job. Pizza Hut’s senior marketing director Jared Drinkwater said that construction of the pizza thrower was “one of the coolest things we’ve seen in a while,” adding that attendees of the show “are going to love taking down Shredder, sampling Cheesy Bites Pizza and will have a lot of fun with both of our brands throughout the convention.”
This is the latest evolution of the partnership between Pizza Hut and the TMNT brand, following the recent release of an ad featuring the heroes on a half-shell breaking into a Pizza Hut kitchen to create some new offerings for the chain.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be released in theaters August 8. Watch an appropriately bombastic video about the creation of the thrower below.
