Fox will be giving away a free Maze Runner comic book to those lucky enough to get into the studio’s Friday Hall H panel.
And if that doesn’t get fans of the upcoming adaptation of the James Dashner book excited, maybe this will: The comic was written by the movie’s director and screenwriter, Wes Ball and T.S. Nowlin, respectively. Marcus To, the artist behind books such as Marvel’s New Warriors and the Harvey-nominated graphic novel Cyborg 009, is the artist.
STORY Comic-Con: Highlights From the Film Lineup
The comic is the first time a studio has commissioned a comic exclusively for the 7,000-plus fans of Hall H, ground zero for Comic-Con’s film panels. It will be given out to attendees of Fox’s panel and will not be available elsewhere.
The comic also marks the first time Fox is partnering with Boom Studios!, the comic publisher with whom it has a first-look deal, on the marketing of one of its movies. (Boom! already publishes comics based on Fox movies such as Planet of the Apes and Big Trouble in Little China but this is the first time it’s making a comic tied to a current or upcoming movie.)

The comic came out of a meeting with Boom! execs and Cristina Mancini, Fox’s senior vp franchise management. The studio was looking for ways to introduce audiences to the world of Maze Runner. The comic’s story, set about three year before the events of the movie and focusing on the character Alby, was initially envisioned as a short film that was to have been shot concurrently with the feature.
The comic will also include an interview with Ball about the making of the movie.
