This week: The New York Times pop and jazz critics discuss their top 10 albums of 2013.

Jon Pareles, Jon Caramanica, Nate Chinen and I recently finished an annual ritual which never gets any easier: paring down hundreds — maybe thousands — of new albums and songs, across style and sound and continent, to a bright, hard, personal elite. Sometimes we know what those records are going to be as soon as we hear them. Sometimes we have no idea until we make our lists in mid-December. Luckily, we don’t all like the same things, or hear music the same way.

On this week’s edition of the Popcast, we talked about our top choices (missing: Mr. Chinen, who will return shortly), and challenged one another to defend our enthusiasms.
