SOUTH LAKE TAHOE-

Mystery solved. The BEAR League says they now know a little bit more about a young bear cub that was left anonymously on their steps a few weeks ago.

The Lake Tahoe-area group found the then-10-week-old female cub in a kennel on their doorstep a few weeks ago. They took her to the Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care facility to be checked out and cared for.

Over the weekend, the BEAR League got a call from a man who claimed he left the orphaned cub. He told the group he found the cub crying and hugging what he assumed was her mother near the Humboldt Redwoods State Park.

The man said the adult bear was dead, but he was not sure of the cause of death. When he reported it to a local agency, they told him to leave the cub. But he said he couldn’t do that, and brought the female cub to the BEAR League.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife will be running DNA samples from the cub to pinpoint her origins, and select a suitable location for her to be released into when she is ready.
