[WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones, “The Lion and the Rose”]
While a certain wedding is getting all the attention after last night’s Game of Thrones, a much quieter scene also is near and dear to director Alex Graves’ heart.
Graves, who already has dissected Joffrey’s death scene for us, says the family dinner with the Baratheons ranks as one of his favorites moments. He affectionately refers to the scene as “At Home With the Baratheons,” calling it one of the most awkward dinners imaginable.

“I actually laughed when I read the scene, and I actually laughed during the filming of it,” Graves tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Selyse is nuts, and basically wants to kill her daughter. Melisandre is bored out of her mind. And Stannis is wishing something would happen.”
Graves used candles to light the next scene, in which Melisandre (Carice van Houten) visits princess Shireen (Kerry Ingram).
“It was a joy, because it was literally like filming one of Grimm’s fairy tales. You literally have the Wicked Witch of the West going up to say goodnight to this little girl,” says Graves. “I kept saying ‘just a little scarier,’ and Carice would get two percent more of a glow in her eyes.”
