Dwayne Johnson is in early discussions to topline The Janson Directive, Universal’s latest adaptation of a Robert Ludlum novel, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The project is in the early stages of development and does not yet have a writer or director attached. Captivate Entertainment, which controls the estate of Ludlum, who also authored the Jason Bourne books, is producing.
Janson was published a year after Ludlum’s death in 2001 and told of a ex-Navy Seal and covert ops specialist who now works as a security consultant. When a rescue operation goes south, he is targeted for termination and must go on the run in order to clear his name.

Universal is eyeing the project as a potential franchise.
Johnson already has strong ties to the studio as he stars in the company’s Fast and Furious movies. He next will be seen in Hercules, which Paramount opens July 25, and is currently shooting New Line’s disaster pic San Andreas in Australia.
