NBC is bringing Red Nose Day to the U.S.
Billed as the U.K.’s No. 1 TV fundraising event, Red Nose Day — in collaboration with charity Comic Relief U.K. — is getting a live three-hour fundraising special on NBC airing May 2015. Expect stand-up performances, sketch comedy, parodies and music performances from A-listers and musicians, though no names were announced.
Funny or Die will also create original content for the special.
“I am incredibly proud that NBCUniversal is broadcasting Red Nose Day,” said Paul Telegdy, president alternative and late night programing, NBC Entertainment. “Once in a while in our jobs we get to do things that can change lives and entertain at the same time.”
Red Nose Day was created by Richard Curtis in 1985, with the aim of using media and celebrities to help raise money and awareness of poverty to save and change millions of lives. It has raised more than $1 billion in donations since it began and the U.K. specials have been BBC’s highest-rated Friday night broadcasts for several years.
Curtis, as well as Dome + Dusted’s Hamish Hamilton and Ian Stewart will serve as executive producers. Hamilton will also direct.
