SACRAMENTO-

The Sacramento City Council has passed a new ordinance that will double the reward for reporting illegal dumping.

“It’s crazy the stuff they left,” Nail & Hair Design manager Tammy Cao said. She says she has captured people on her surveillance cameras dumping toys, furniture and large amounts of trash behind her shop off Northgate Boulevard three different times.

The old city ordinance on illegal dumping rewarded people who report it $500. With the new ordinance, that amount increases to $1,000. The new ordinance goes into effect in 30 days.

“It’s a major problem in a lot of our areas and we have tried educating people,” City Council member Jay Schenirer told FOX40.

But that hasn’t really worked, according to the city.

The biggest problem areas across Sacramento are in parts of Oak Park, Del Paso and Meadowview neighborhoods. Just within the last year, the city says it has cleaned up 7,000 illegal dumping sites.

In order to get the full reward, the tip would have to lead to a misdemeanor arrest or citation.
