Blind, a visually and narratively experimental drama from first-time director Eskil Vogt, has won the Best European Film honor awarded by the European Cinemas Network.
The Norwegian/Dutch co-production stars Ellen Dorrit Petersen as Ingrid, a blind woman who lives with her husband Morten (Henrik Rafaelsen). When he goes to work, she sits by the window by herself, listening to the radio and telling herself stories about her life that may or may not be true.

“Blind is a breath of fresh air – an original debut feature with a really interesting approach to narrative structure,” said the European Cinemas jury in a statement. “The film teases the audience, playing with notions of fantasy and reality. Above all, it is an art-house film that will engage with and provoke debate among the younger audience – a welcome counter-point to the predominance of middle-aged dramas.”
Blind will now receive the support of as part of the award, European Network’s partners, which jointly operate nearly 3,000 cinema screens across 68 countries, will support Blind’s pan-European release.
The Cinema Network’s honor has proven a good omen for winning titles. Last year’s winner, The Broken Circle Breakdown, went on to become a sleeper hit across Europe and score an Oscar nomination for best foreign language film.
