The City of Vacaville has posted temporary warning signs along nearby hiking trails

SACRAMENTO –

Vacaville residents are on high alert Friday, after multiple sightings of mountain lions along nearby hiking trails.

Hikers using the trails near Lagoon Valley recently reported seeing a mountain lion, as well as others near Cherry Glen Road and Butcher Road.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife does not consider mountain lions a public safety concern, as long as the animal is not aggressive toward people. But that hasn’t stopped police, or the city, from warning people of potential encounters.

“Fight back,” urged Vacaville Police spokesperson Mark Mazzaferro. “Don’t just assume you’ve got no chance. If you’ve got a walking stick, hit them; use your hands, your fist, whatever you can to protect yourself.”

In case of an encounter, the Mountain Lion Association recommends to make noise, maintain eye contact while slowly creating distance. Officials also urge to cover your neck and throat if attacked.
