TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE-

For the first time in nearly three years, Travis Air Force Base will host an airshow.

Ahead of the show on May 4 and 5, pilots and personnel at Travis Air Force base prepared a KC-10 refueling jet for takeoff.

“The KC-10 is is the fuel to the fight,” boom operator Randy Kay said.

Traveling at about 25,000 feet, several KC-10s flew from Fairfield to Lake Tahoe and back Thursday morning, while refueling several fighter planes in the air.

“We are excited to have the air show back,” Lt. Col. Thad Middleton said. “When you hear the engines roll, whether it’s a KC-10 or a Thunderbird, there’s a little part of you that says, ‘Wow, that’s pretty neat.”‘

In April of 2013, the Pentagon announced that the Thunderbirds and various other air-units could not fly for the remainder of the fiscal year due to budget cuts. However, with the new year, came a new federal budget, and the Travis Airshow, along with dozens of airshows across the nation are on schedule.

The 2014 Travis Air Show is free to the public. The gates open on Saturday and Sunday at 9:30 a.m., while the show begins at 11 a.m.
