More than a year after being picked up to pilot, MTV‘s Scream adaptation is moving forward, setting up its young cast and behind-the-scenes team.
Willa Fitzgerald (Royal Pains) will topline the adaptation of Wes Craven‘s and Kevin Williamson‘s horror franchise, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Amy Forsyth (Reign), John Karna (The Neighbors), Carlson Young (The Kroll Show) and newcomer Amadeus Serafini will co-star in the drama.
Jamie Travis (Faking It) will direct the pilot, which hails from Dimension Films and The Weinstein Co. Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin (Criminal Minds, Revenge) penned the original script, with Jill Blotevogel (Harper’s Island, Ravenswood) on board to executive produce and serve as showrunner. Harvey and Bob Weinstein will exec produce MTV’s reboot alongside Wes Craven, Marianne Maddalena and Cathy Konrad, all of whom served in the same capacity on the original franchise. Williamson is not involved in the MTV take. Tony DiSanto and Liz Gateley, who originally brought the Scream project to MTV in 2012, will also exec produce via their DiGa Vision banner.
Fitzgerald will star as Emma Duvall, a classic beauty whose looks and popularity hide a natural shyness and intellectual nature. Her new life with the “in crowd” leaves her estranged from her from childhood best friend, Audrey. Emma is the lead in MTV’s Scream take and bears a resemblance to Neve Campbell‘s tortured high school student Sidney Prescott in the 1996 feature film.
Forsyth’s Audrey Jensen is the daughter of a Lutheran pastor. She’s described as an artsy loner who aspires to be a filmmaker.
Karna is set as Noah Foster, a creative computer genius with a vast knowledge of pop culture and the tech world. He’s best friends with Audrey.
Young will portray Brooke Maddox, the charismatic leader of the popular crew whose personality vacillates between bubbly sweetness and ferocious sex appeal.
Serafini will be Kieran Wilcox, the mysterious new kid in town with a dark side and a tough exterior that hint at experience beyond his years.
Fitzgerald is repped by Paradigm; Forsyth is with AMI Artist Management in Canada and David Dean Management; Karna is with Gersh and Coronel Group; Young is with Innovative and LINK Entertainment; and Serafini is with GVA and Luber Roklin. Travis is with WME, Media Talent Group and Gang Tyre. Blotevogel is with APA.
The original Scream (1996) starred Campbell as Sidney Prescott, a high school student in a fictional town who becomes the target of a killer known as Ghostface. The first film explored her relationship with friends and boyfriend, as well as the reporter and cop who investigated the case.
Scream is MTV’s only drama pilot currently in the works. The Viacom-owned cabler also is readying comedy Ken Jeong Made Me Do It.
