STOCKTON —

A suspect in the murder of a Stockton minister has turned himself in with a lawyer.

On May 6, a gunfight broke out near Main Street and Sharon Avenue. According to police investigation, Jesus Villegas Mendoza, 23, was driving home to his family when a bullet went through the car windshield and hit him.

Mendoza was taken to UC Davis Medical Center, were he died from his injuries. An investigation determined Mendoza, a husband and father who served minister at a local church for the last three years, was not the intended target, and was killed by a stray bullet.

A no-bail felony homicide arrest warrant for 17-year-old Keith Denegal, a suspect in the incident, was issued one week later.

Tuesday, Denegal turned himself into the Stockton Police Department with a lawyer. Denegal was booked into Juvenile Hall.
