CITRUS HEIGHTS-
More than two dozen students who felt the effects of a hazmat situation, forced the evacuation of the student body Thursday at Sylvan Middle School in Citrus Heights.
Investigators believe what those students were reacting to may have been pepper spray or some other kind of irritant.
“We do know of one student who did have a canister of pepper spray on their person this afternoon,” Trent Allen, spokesman for the San Juan Unified School District, said. He added that there was no indication that the canister actually discharged.
Of the 25 students that needed to be checked out medically, two went to the hospital. They were said to have minor injuries.
