Moreover, the indie comedy has gotten a start date, ending speculation as to what Levinson’s next movie will be. He’s set to start shooting Kasbah in June from a script by Mitch Glazer.
News of the group casting comes two weeks after LaBeouf tweeted that he was retiring from “all public life” because of “attacks against his artistic integrity.”
Brian Grazer and Tom Freston are executive producing Kasbah, which QED International will shop to foreign buyers at Berlin’s upcoming European Film Market. QED’s Bill Block is producing the ensemble pic alongside Glazer, Venture Forth’s Jacob Pechenik and Shangri-La Entertainment’s Steve Bing.
Rock the Kasbah tells the story of Richie Vance, a a has-been rock manager who takes his last remaining client on a USO tour of Afghanistan. When Richie finds himself in Kabul, abandoned, penniless and without his passport, he discovers a young girl with an extraordinary voice and manages her through Afghanistan’s version of American Idol, the wildly popular Afghan Star.

“I couldn’t have dreamed of a more perfect team of comic actors to round out this wickedly funny and heartfelt film,” Levinson said.
QED’s Berlin sales slate also includes Time Out of Mind, starring Richard Gere and directed by Oren Moverman.
